Flat Area to Cross

Take a look at these images and see if you notice anything similar about all 3:

If you noted the slopes before the crossing point then you are right!

At most crossings or kerb ramps, you will find that there is a slope right before the crossing. For a wheelchair user waiting for the right time to cross the road, this can be hard to stay still while waiting. This is why it’s important for them to know where the flattest yet closest area is for them to wait to cross the road.

Watch this video to learn more about these slopes and how to measure it.

Flat Area to Cross is subcategorised by the angle of the slope before the kerb:

  • 0.0 - 1.9 degrees

  • 2.0 - 3.9 degrees

  • 4.0 - 5.9 degrees

  • 6.0 degrees +

Let’s see how well you understood that.
