Health and Safety
Health and Safety is very important here at Smart Access. It is crucial to ensure that you are doing your work safely and with little risk as possible.
If you have not yet already, you will receive an email by your supervisor or admin with the Health and Safety plan for Smart Access and your local council. It is important that you read through this and gain an understanding of the steps you need to take if something occurs.
We will discuss some of those points within this section of your training. Your health and safety is important to us.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
You are required to always wear the appropriate PPE gear, particularly a high-visibility vest (hi-vis). If you do not have one, please inform your supervisor so that they can organise to have this sent out to you with your equipment. Wearing a hi-vis vest is a requirement at Smart Access.
As well as the appropriate PPE gear, you will also be required to wear your ID tag, which will be sent to you with your equipment.
Traffic Safety
Be aware of your surroundings and pay attention to vehicles and traffic when you are close to the road. Look both ways before crossing the road and use designated crosswalks where available. There will be some features that will require you to get close to the road - we expect you to be sensible when collecting this data and wait for traffic to clear before taking these measurements - such as the roadside measurements of a kerb ramp.
Obey traffic rules and signals at all times. Do not jaywalk or take unnecessary risks. It is also important to note that as you will be wearing your ID tag, you will be representing the Smart Access team. Irresponsible or foolish decisions will look badly on Smart Access. We expect you to
Sidewalk and Footpath Safety
Walk on designated sidewalks and footpaths whenever possible. If there is no sidewalk, or you need to veer off for whatever reason, walk facing straffic and stay as far away from vehicles as possible.
Be cautious of uneven surfaces, potholes, or other hazards that may cause slips, trips or falls. Report any significant hazards to your supervisor and include these in your Health and Safety Weekly Reviews.
Weather Conditions
Be prepared for various weather conditions. Dress appropriately for the temperature and wear suitable protective gear, such as hats, sunscreen, or raincoats. In the heat, take proper breaks and ensure you have enough water to keep hydrated.
In the case of rain, do what makes you feel comfortable. If you are happy to work in the rain then that is fine however be sure to take extra precautions to be careful. If it gets too slippery then stop working. If the rain affects the ability to measure or take photos then do not continue.
For extreme weather conditions, such as heavy rain, storms or snow, we recommend staying in and asking for inside work. Do NOT work if it is snowing, hailing, thundering, or lightning.
Reporting Incidents and Emergencies
You will be required to provide a Health and Safety Weekly Review at the end of your working week. This will include various things such as plans and performance, hazard management, expectations and any incidents. You can find the form here. Your supervisor will inform you more of this.
If you witness or experience any incidents, accidents, or near misses while working, report them immediately to your supervisor and include a detailed report in your Health and Safety Weekly Reviews. These should include the date, time and detailed description of what occurred and how it was resolved / or what the outcome was.
You should also familiarise yourself with emergency procedures and the location of nearby medical facilities in case of injuries and emergencies.
Remember, your safety is our top priority at Smart Access. By adhering to these health and safety guidelines, we can ensure a secure and productive work environment for everyone involved.
